Merry Christmas Revisted

There’s something going on this Christmas season.  I buy something and when I start to leave the checker says ‘Have a nice day’ or ‘Have a good one’.  It seems to be deliberate and it happens everywhere (except Hobby Lobby).  It’s like there’s been a global directive issued.

I can see where this might make the checker’s life easier.  The poor checker, stuck in the middle.  If you say ‘Happy Holidays’ you might get a tongue lashing from a Christian, a Christian full of peace, joy and love.  If you say ‘Merry Christmas’ you could get a lecture from people who think that simple message is offensive, from people who believe in tolerance for all faiths.  Well, almost all.

It seems like we are all either scared of somebody or mad at somebody.  This has got to stop.  Jesus didn’t call us to fear or to wrath.

Proverbs 4:12 says ‘Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.’  Some translations say ‘guard your heart’.  I seems we have forgotten that.  We feed on the words of those who are all too willing to encourage us to fear and hate.

The danger is not welfare cheats or illegal aliens or economic malaise or terrorist violence.  The real danger, the greatest danger we face is a heart overwhelmed  with fear and hate.

About Angus Lewis

My wife and I lived our whole lives in Arkansas until ten years ago. We moved to the Kansas City area in 2011 (a job change). That was the reason for the 'From a Far Country' title. Our children and grandchildren were in Arkansas. Six months ago we sold our house and bought one in Sherwood, Arkansas and my wife moved back down here. Two weeks ago I retired and moved back too. (I'm probably going to try to find something part time to keep me out of trouble.) So maybe the 'From a Far Country' title is not so much of a fit anymore. But I think I'll stick with it. I'm still not home. Not yet. The Bible says we are all strangers and pilgrims here. Our real home is with God and some day we'll be there. We'll be home.

Last night a checker at Walmart actually said Merry Christmas. What is the world coming to?
