Movie of the Week

One Fine Day

We watched this Sunday night.  A perfect Valentine’s Day movie although I didn’t think about the connection at the time.  George Clooney and Michelle Pheiffer   A movie of the Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail, When Harry Met Sally ilk but this to me is by far the best of the bunch.  Yes better than When Harry Met Sally.  Two people who at the beginning of the day have no use for each other wind up at the end…  Well, you need to watch it.  The cool thing is nobody has sex.  Nobody even talks about sex.

A movie this good has to have a pedigree.  Michelle Pheiffer is one of the executive producers.  That helps.  George Clooney is always a professional.  You don’t notice how he fits into a role.  He’s not George Clooney playing a part.  He is the character.  But is that enough?  The director was Michael Hoffman.  He’s done four movies, all of them excellent but you would expect greater success, a bigger name by now.  One of the writers was the daughter of Neil Simon.  Does that mean something?

There doesn’t seem to be much reason for it but this movie just works, from acting to direction to script to music (great music), to the city.  And the ending is perfect.

A sweet movie.

About Angus Lewis

My wife and I lived our whole lives in Arkansas until ten years ago. We moved to the Kansas City area in 2011 (a job change). That was the reason for the 'From a Far Country' title. Our children and grandchildren were in Arkansas. Six months ago we sold our house and bought one in Sherwood, Arkansas and my wife moved back down here. Two weeks ago I retired and moved back too. (I'm probably going to try to find something part time to keep me out of trouble.) So maybe the 'From a Far Country' title is not so much of a fit anymore. But I think I'll stick with it. I'm still not home. Not yet. The Bible says we are all strangers and pilgrims here. Our real home is with God and some day we'll be there. We'll be home.

Watched this movie long ago–had forgotten all about it. Going to have to watch it again! So rare to find movies that are “safe” these days. Thanks.
